Have you ever had something happen that you knew was from God but you're not quite sure how it happened? My mom and I talked about it, wondered about it, and were in awe about it for years. It was a miracle that we shared together.
It was December 1970, and I was seventeen years old. I was driving my parents, Rex and Catherine Farnsworth, from Denver, Colorado to Kirtland, New Mexico. I was driving their 1968 Pontiac GTO. We were on the north side of Wolf Creek Pass, traveling south, ready to head up the mountain. Wolf Creek Pass is a high mountain pass on the Continental Divide, in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. It has an elevation of 10,900 feet. It was then, and continues to be, a treacherous stretch of highway. In places, there are no guardrails with sheer drop-offs. Driving this road in the wintertime is not for the faint-hearted.
Part way up the mountain, I hit a patch of black ice and slid off the road. Fortunately, this stretch of the southbound lane went along a cliff face. We ended up in a ditch with the passenger side of the car close to but not touching the cliff face. Dad got in the driver’s seat, and mom and I went to the front of the car to rock it back and forth to try to get it unstuck. I was on the left side of the car near the cliff face and mom was in the middle of the car. We had been rocking it back and forth for about 4-5 minutes with no success.
Then, another car traveling in the southbound lane hit the same patch of black ice and slid into the back of our car with considerable force, rolling the car forward. Instantly, I was lifted by an unseen force and carried along the cliff face to a height of about three to four feet above the ground; enough to get me above the hood of the car. After the car stopped moving, I floated gently to the ground. My mom wasn’t so fortunate. The forward momentum of the car hit her and knocked her under the car. Because I was so confused and amazed about what was happening to me, I didn’t realize that mom had been knocked to the ground and was under the car.
At the same time this was going on in the southbound lane, there was a line of cars heading northbound. The man in the front car heading northbound saw what was happening and stopped his car and got out to see if he could assist. He saw mom go under the car. He also saw a gentleman pulling mom out from underneath the car. By the time he got there, the man pulling my mom from under our car was gone. No one saw where he went. Mom didn’t see him either because she was facing away from him. He pulled her out, stood her on her feet, and then just disappeared. Miraculously, mom was not hurt at all even though she should have sustained serious injuries.
Mom and I had a conversation soon afterward about what happened. It was then that I told her about my miracle. We knew that we had been saved by God’s heavenly angels. He entered our story that day and sent his angels to protect me and mom. We continued to talk about that miraculous event for the rest of her life. She would bring it up all the time, even with other family members. I don’t know why, but we never asked dad if he saw anything that day, and he never offered to say one way or the other.
I went on to raise a family of my own and our family, extended family, and our friends had the chance to have another 34 years with mom. We were both so grateful for those heavenly angels, one seen (kind of) and one unseen. My mom passed away in 2004 and is now on the other side of the veil. Knowing her, I’m sure one of the first things she did was find out who saved her and her son that December day in 1970. I look forward to getting the rest of the story when it's my time to pass through the veil. Until then, it will remain a mystery.
